How to pace two to three hours of mystery games: setup, resets, scoring, and the order that keeps four people at the table.
A four-person mystery night covers about three games of 40-60 minutes — roughly two to three hours including setup and resets. That single fact is the budget for the whole evening.
Open short. A 15-minute Codenames grid teaches four people to talk in clues and costs almost nothing to reset. Opening with a 120-minute case, by contrast, spends the whole budget before anyone has warmed up.
On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.
The centrepiece is the longest box: a 60-minute Exit scenario at difficulty 1-2 for a new table, or a 90-120 minute Consulting Detective case if the night started early. Build a 10-15 minute changeover after it — snacks, prop reset, score tally.
Close with a known game. A Cluedo round runs on rules everyone already holds, so the night ends on a solve. Keep score across the evening — grids won, cases solved, minutes left on the escape timer — and let the score pick next week's host.
For the centrepiece hour, the home escape-room page has the minute-by-minute build; for choosing the boxes themselves, the comparison page sorts everything by players and minutes.
